Thomas Batardière, born in 1980 in Angers, was drawn to wine in 2008 after studying anthropology and working as a cinematographer. After working as a sommelier, he joined Château Yvonne in Saumur, where he became Mathieu Vallée's right-hand man while studying agriculture in Beaune.
In 2012, Thomas started his own vineyard in Rablay-sur-Layon, purchasing 2 ha of Chenin without any equipment or winery. Over time, he expanded to 4ha, applying biodynamic principles and building his winery near Richard Leroy. Most of his vineyards are south of the River Layon, growing Chenin, Cabernet Franc, and Grolleau, with key plots in Faye d'Anjou.
Thomas focuses on the finesse and acidity of Chenin, picking early to preserve purity, and fermenting in small stainless steel vats without sulphur. He works reductively on the lees and only adds sulfur when necessary. Known for his pragmatic approach, Thomas is a talented vigneron who has already set his stamp in the region.
